Silverfoxxx:"So yes, it really is a 'big' thing to dumb it down. On the other hand, if you wish to appear dumb to others...who cares! "

"Big Brother" cares a lot, and in some tyrannies, "he" thinks he can do something about it.

Meanwhile, the "Academie Francaise" or whatever they deign to call them selves look ludicrous while they try to outlaw sexy or irresistably expressive words from London in their "own" language.

Anyway, their insipid efforts to dictate details of speech to the polyglot rabble within their own homogenizing realm are merely silly news items for slow news days in the otherwise eventless state-planned on-schedule wasteland..

Definitions of ludicrous on the Web:

farcical: broadly or extravagantly humorous; resembling farce; "the wild farcical exuberance of a clown"; "ludicrous green hair"
absurd: incongruous;inviting ridicule; "the absurd excuse that the dog ate his homework"; "that's a cockeyed idea"; "ask a nonsensical question and get a nonsensical answer"; "a contribution so small as to be laughable"; "it is ludicrous to call a cottage a mansion"; "a preposterous attempt to turn back the pages of history"; "her conceited assumption of universal interest in her rather dull children was ridiculous"

DWAardvark, watching television programs like Univision (Spanish) because he can, and not because the "Academie Francaise" "wants" him to do otherwise for the spread of their own particular corrupted and inferior Latin dialect.

Admittedly, English is even farther corrupted from a bastardized Latin or old German than French.

"
Definitions of academie francaise on the Web:

Founded in 1635 under the auspices of the Cardinal Richelieu, this body was, and remains, an autonomous corporation composed of the forty supposedly most prominent writers of the day. Its mission was and is to standardize the French language, and its Dictionnaire carries the force of law. ...

The Académie française, or French Academy, is the pre-eminent French learned body on matters pertaining to the French language. The Académie was officially established in 1635 by Cardinal Richelieu, the chief minister to King Louis XIII. Suppressed in 1793 during the French Revolution, it was restored in 1803 by Napoleon Bonaparte. It is the oldest of the five académies of the Institut de France.

"Force of law?" Hawhaw.
