There are convergent pressures applied, by the mass media, as never before in history.

I am acquiring some better grasp of Spanish right now.

If I hired a housekeeper, Spanish is more likely than German for a medium of communication, so in the intermediate term, I think Spanish will spread more, over German, at least. (She may also have 5 kids.) The majority in the Americas speaks Spanish, I believe. Germans and Europeans, to their credit, contrary to your article, are commonly speaking accent-free "English".
