Silverfoxxx:"I have hundreds in my garden." I saw one only once, in the wild, in the Carolinas, at that. Yes, that back yard was kinda wild. Clearly, it's the largest, rather most unbelievable insect I have ever seen, swivelling its "neck" to look me over, and estimate my protein content. We human *males* should count ourselves very lucky, compared to those guys. (I have already noted that the *female* chimp seems to have taken up sharp sticks first.) I'm not really sure whether I was looking at a vicious backyard predator, or just a passive hedonistic unarmed and altruistic unafraid determined little green male. Thanks for confirming my vague memory with that excellent link. In brief: Nature sometimes provides a double bounty, good sex and a good meal. (Something to pray for?) Sort of alien, eh? Now I yam myself wondering how those green males taste. Like old asparagus, maybe? For the sake of the natural environment, we should spare the Shedevillish females & their (better tasting) fertilized eggs, *if* we can tell the difference. |
