Crossbowman:"Further, early religion had little or nothing to do with "cultural manipulation"."

I disagree, after growing up with hearing lots of "preaching", which one could unkindly characterise (some) as harangues.

Once I heard a Catholic priest give a sermon on a Sunday night venture, with a Catholic friend, though, and then, again, once at a funeral, and they sounded quite fair, conventional, and reasonable. The cultural manipulation, was there, though, only very subtle. Anyway, I believe that "religion" (cave or skyscraper) gets much of its conformity through affiliation needs and social pressures, IMO.

Science, for its part, doesn't do much better or differently, IMO. Or?
