I am opposed to abortion, and I think the idea of an anti-abortion club in a school is interesting and appealing. I'm glad they won their suit. It wouldn't surprise me to find out that the ACLU refused to intervene. The ACLU exists to protect civil liberties like joining an anti-abortion club or a vegetarian or an anti-profanity club. The ACLU isn't perfect, of course, but neither is any other human organization. I am equally opposed to making laws which attempt to force good behavior with threats of punishment. Such laws so frequently end up causing more harm than good that I think we should be wary of passing them. A case in point is the set of laws on which the "war on drugs" is founded. Using drugs in a way that damages the health of the user or which weakens his ability to live up to his obligations to his family or his community is certainly undesirable behavior. There are many ways to make such behavior less likely to occur. But making laws which imprison people for using, possessing or selling such drugs, whether the drugs in question are being used in a harmful way or not reminds me of burning down a house to kill the roaches.
