Putting aside the enormous cost of getting there, we have vast amounts of wasteland right here if all you want is a place to put a house. The real trick is food, water, and power - and if you can solve that one well enough to support large numbers of people on Mars, or on the Moon, or for that matter in orbit, then those same solutions will work quite nicely for people down here.
