The following article recently appeared in the Fort Worth Star Telegram; More than 5,000 PRE-kindergartners were left behind last year, EXPELLED from their preschools, according to a new survey by the Yale Child Study Center. These children were expelled at a rate more than three times higher than K-12th graders. There were more than four times as many boys than girls, twice as many African American as European-American children and twice as many 4-year-olds as as younger pre-schoolers. The study didn't track the reasons the children were expelled but raises the concern that children in pre-K programs may not be getting the help they need to learn to control themselves so that they'll be ready for Kindergarten. If the expelled student need more help than others, are we missing an early opportunity to prevent later school failure by kicking them out rather than transferring them to special programs that can help? This study recorded only the teachers' behavior--whether and how many children the expelled. The study didn't tell us about the children's
The problem with finger-pointing is that it pits allies against each other: Teachers and Parents COULD work closely together to help children to learn self-control. I just thought this was worth posting for all to see; Regards; Skeptic-D......... |
