From what little I did follow. When you have a mom who has already been implicated in a *con* job, it really shoots the case. Add to that a DA who seems to have too much personal interest in the case. I really really don't know what I think about MJ. My wife is of the opinion that he never really grew up and I share that view at times. IOW, he has the sexuality of a pre-teenager. Innocent? No, predator? No. Messed up head? Most def! The prosecution did a poor job? No doubt. Of course that might be understandable. They believed in what they were doing so strongly, they didn't realize others didn't. BTW, I don't agree with your statement:

The prosecution did its best to make lemonade out of those lemons

The main DA had his own agenda. He was convinced of MJ's guilt and really didn't bother focusing on the strength's of the case. IOW going with conspiracy really hurt him.
