Two errors in your post (I am reasonably sure).

Edit
I think my social milieu in the past was closer to MJ's than most people's here and certain things I am rather sure about. For example, you say "... he could "clean up" previous awkward situations with a settlement..." No. Somebody else would do the "cleaning up", not Michael.

Continuing, "...and then rationalize them away in his mind." He did not need to rationalize what was not wrong in his mind. The children wanted sex. (This is how I believe MJ thought, if he bothered to think at all about past encounters with kids.) You and I might need to rationalize such actions if we had engaged in pedophilia, but a real pedophile would not, in my experience.

The comparison with HH seems valid.

I think the comment about religion misses the mark. In or out of the church, pedophilia happens.

Do pedophiles seek out the priesthood? It seems to me that, given the mental workings of a pedophile, namely being unable to feel what the victims are feeling, that is, being unable to intuit a moral system, it seems to me that such a morally incompetent person might seek a ready made moral system that spells out exactly what one can and cannot do to be considered morally fit. It must feel strange to have to refer to a set of rules as you decide about things like having sex with kids. Most of us just have a gut instinct that feels the hurt the child would feel. Pedophiles don't have that. If they don't want to be considered morally unfit and if they don't want to go to hell, the moral system of the church might look attractive to them. Do you buy this idea? I'm not sure I've convinced myself.
