Today, there's not much in the way of self-interest for people to support cloning. People envision the rich multiplying their selfish selves ten thousand times over, increasing the parasitical load the working man carries on his back. Nobody would advocate financing the cloning of the poor and probably not even the middle-class could afford it. And because the right-wing controls the U.S. probably the only thing to come of cloning now would be super-soldiers and super-workers (with no need of sleep, able to work long hours, docile). The more radical the new technology, the more need for good government. People must be persuaded of wise stewardship before they will support cloning. Today, there is not much chance of wise stewardship of cloning, under the Republicans. That it would be used to enrich the already rich, there can be no doubt, and that it would be used to oppress the oppressed, also there could be no doubt. Cloning could be the ultimate fulfillment of the capitalist dream, creating a race of docile worker bees who will work for almost nothing and be content, and a class of perfect elite. Somewhat like the movie _Gattaca_. |
