Edit
Remi:"One problem with genetic engineering is that only a few years ago it was completely impossible to do and almost impossible to imagine. Now that previously undreamed of vistas of possibility are opening up, the problems of using the available techniques responsibly are becoming visible. They are shocking partly because they had never been contemplated before. "

The Frankenstein "model" is simplistic, but then possibly valid. Technocrat's "owner/handlers" could pursue unsavory programs.

I find permitting secrecy in these activities as one great danger with ominous ramifications.

The directions and explorations, and missteps of genetic research should be available to the public forums. This is consistent with the highest ideals of "pure" science.

IMO, totalitarian governments may be most disposed and tempted to explore and exploit abuses of genetic research, especially if they are reaching for dominance of other authorities and entities in the world.

Meanwhile, the most crass negative characterizations of enterprising genetic patent holders are already occurring, Europe agricultural interests vs. USA, those envious reactionary "sky is falling" chicken little critics.

So what, if my football-sized strawberry is an intriguing seedless cross with one of Ron M's Disney World watermelons, with some north sea Salmon genes for frost resistance, inherited on it's grandmother's ancestral Icelandic side?

Don't try this: Black pepper on sliced strawberries. The Swiss do that. I found that it gave me a belly ache, and did nothing for the strawberries. Intriguingly, the strawberries did assist in bringing out the subtler diverse pepper flavors.
