A hypothesis is by definition unproven. The best hypothesis does not always prove correct. On the other hand, why should we embrace less-than-best while waiting for the rest of the facts to come in? The fact that the best does not always prove correct is a basis for keeping one's mind open to alternatives, but it is NOT a basis for discarding the best BEFORE it's disproven nor for declaring the unlikely to be likely. There's a difference between possible and probable. There's a difference between open-mindedness and uncritical acceptance.
