Footnote 6:"A counter-Earth, supposed to orbit in Earth's orbit but on the opposite side of the sun, proposed by Philolaus, circa 400 BC" I question that the concept of an Earth orbiting the Sun was deeply held by any Greek, at a level of permanent internal truth, that early, IF he/she/it were to be held to honesty. So, there you actually have a case of a "truth" not being held in an honest mind. Further, what we had there was an untestable theory, resting on another theory that was actually representative of fact. Namely, an Earth orbiting the Sun in the first place. "We" can now test that ?antipodal theory, with space probes, and place it in the "untrue" bin. In my own mind, anyway. Showing my own possible fallibility, I think that the honest Darwinists, like Dawkins, should allow other theories without squawking and posturing so inauthentically. THINK, OR thwim |
