There seems to be an opposing higher reasoning and an automatic animal element to this.

The animal "knows" that sometimes you forget to turn off the light inside the refrigerator.

I myself have been known to get out of the car and check the house door even though I yam *positive* that I just locked it. It's just not worth the subliminal anxiety to *not* do that, since it only takes a few seconds.
