Hippie was a uniquely American expression of liberation,which was propelled by drug inspired music, spilled over into Great Britain and attained Gothic fuzzy outlines in Germany.
Psychedelic drugs were the overriding vehicle, not Marijuana. The entire episode was generated in "The Americas." This would include the German-Brazilian component that moved Coke and Acid into the Berlin and Munich underground. As an aside - it is a fact that Coke was favored by Goering for romper room escapades with boys - and relieved the SS from their chronic "speed jitters" and Heroin constipation. The Hippie mind, released from its cultural mooring, easily adapted to Hindu spiritual philosophy, bringing a stream of practitioners to the US and England. The sympathetic welcoming committees of Sadhus in India for Amer-Brit, German, Dutch, and Swiss darlings created living sexual symposiums that would rival the Ajanta. Marijuana, while all of this spirit rampage was going on, was quietly being smoked by truck drivers, peanut farmers, NY ad men, Harvard undergrads, Los Alamos physicists, Valley Girls, fishermen, priests, cops, cons, housewives, and every other segment of the population civilian and military. Nixon had not yet been exposed, as Cocaine began influencing Washington politics. Flown into Miami nightly from refrigerated warehouses in The Bahamas, the magic powder began transforming the culture from the top down. Architects began wearing silk suits, politicians began travelling to Europe, suburbia learned about pasta and the value of original art, subtle makeup, how to have another exciting life running in tandem with the boring bedroom, and most of all - how to ascend socially and create an upper class. While the under income 'Hippie' sank into junk speed and Heroin, 'America the Beautiful' became more glamorous, celebrating the holidays at the newly acquired chalet near the slopes, or vacationing in undiscovered Italian hill towns. I won't bore you further with my facility at describing the big picture.
