This post is a continuance for both you and DWA. Some of what I put forth will be known by both of you, so if I appear pedantic or blah blah, please forgive. I have the utmost respect for both of you.
Drugs are illegal because they are in demand. The little soliloquy in 'Godfather' was such bullshit that it ruined the film for me. Italians love drugs. There's an old saying: New york: The Jews own it, The Irish run it, and the Italians enjoy it. The control of Heroin by Italians came through the docks. NY is a seaport - in the twenties there was no trans Atlantic air conveyance. Thus, maritime transit was the only way to get the goods from Beirut, which for over a century was the main transit point for Opium and Hashish. The Mexican connection started in the early nineteenth century and grew exponentially during the Civil War. Opium and hash were the fuel of the avant garde in Paris, from 1860 and on. By the early twentieth, Bayer was beginning to explore the chemical composition of Morphine and the refinement into Heroin. Heroin was a word derived from 'Heros'the Greek for 'Hero'. Little was known about the hyper addictive property of H, and Hitler was so elated by Heroin that he determined it should be available to the Wermacht, to make his army invincible. Goering became equally elated with Meth-Amphetimine. The Russian front was saturated with speed toward the final months because the British win at El Alamein interupted the supply of Heroin raw material. The Wermacht had field dispensaries - mobile speed labs that were installed on two wheeled trailers that could be driven quickly to any location. One of these was auctioned off in Arizona a few years ago to a wealthy collector of WWII Memorabilia. More later. The spellcheck keeps going offline and I have to re enter.
