...that Risperdal is a bad medication. All medications have some risk of side effects of one sort or another. What works well for one person can prove useless in a second and disastrous in a third. Risperdal is a very effective medication for treatment of psychotic symptoms, but it does carry some risks.

Readers: for all antipsychotic medications, it is the standard of medical practice for the psychiatrist to attempt a gradual dose reduction after you have been free of symptoms for about a year, unless your history clearly shows that such a reduction is not advisable. If your doctor has not mentioned this after about a year in treatment, and you have not been diagnosed to have a chronic psychotic disorder, you should ask him or her about this option. All antipsychotics carry some small risk of Extrapyramidal Symptoms, and these eye twitches are only one of several possible ways the condition can manifest. Long-term treatment is only advisable or necessary for conditions that are expected to persist throughout the patient's life. There's no profit in taking risks you don't need to take.

However, do not try to change your medication regimen on your own. While there are risks associated with taking certain medications, there are also risks associated with stopping some medications too abruptly. Let your doctor decide how best to approach dose reduction, and if you are not satisfied with your doctor's decisions, seek a second medical opinion from another doctor. Just 'cause the man's been to medical school does not mean he can't make mistakes.
