Weed, in the form of Hashish,was discovered during the Crusades by those who journeyed to the eastern Mediteranian. It was brought back to northern Europe and became the secret elixir of the aristocracy in France and Britain. It played a big role in the enlightenment of the early Rennaisance.
However, long before, the BC Egyptians had made their incredibly pure hashish available to the Romans. Indeed, the Greeks were able to extend philosophic thought through an even earlier exposure to both Hashish and Opium. The pattern of on off general usage has been moving through civilization like a mysterious sine wave. Coca was brought back to the Spanish Court immediately, with the returning explorers of South America. The effect was stupendous - Spain went on a roll of expeditionary development that moved through the South and North American Continents and Pacific world, securing an economy which grew exponentially for three centuries and left an idellible imprint on the civilized world. The effect of these drugs on civilization is studied in only one place of higher learning. The University of Tel Aviv has a doctorate program which examines all of the history, along with a current over view of drugs and culture. Marijuana is Hemp. Hemp enabled vessels to sail around the world and provided fibre for fabric over thousands of years. Opium "opened" the human mind to layers of consciousness that were not accessible prior to its introduction in ancient China. In Egypt, beer was the staple of the west bank of the Nile - the working mass of humanity which moved stones. In the Temple, Hashish was the elixir of the priesthood and aristocracy. American culture has been transformed by Marijuana and Cocaine - yet little attention has been given to the side effects. There is a down side to these drugs. More on that, later.
