I did a post some time back - http://www.truthtree.com/Paranormal/posts/1805.html - where I discussed the disturbing state of cosmic physics. It boils down to this: the math that predicts this universe also predicts that a host of other, extremely bizarre universes are not only possible but more likely, simply because it takes fewer improbable events to lead to their existence. One such possiblity is a universe consisting entirely of a single naked brain. Another, presumably, would be a universe in which all the matter in it just happened by random chance to be perfectly organized and vectored, in a universe of just the right rules, to end in the creation of a single lone Bulova watch. Now imagine a set of rules governing inter-universal interactions that had the Bulova universe decay into our own universe at just the point where there existed a Bulova-shaped pocket in some ancient sedimentary deposit. So utterly improbable as to make flights of complete fancy look like hard science, the kind of thing so improbable that you would not expect it anywhere in the universe at anytime within its entire period of existence - yet, mathematically, not entirely impossible. And still, no deity waved his magic wand - it was all in the math. Most scientists really, really hope the math is wrong. However, a few are wondering if they might be able to build a spaceship around the idea and are experimenting with concepts involving a cup of tea. ;-) "Robbins’s claim fails because the Hobbs Act does not apply when the National Government is the intended beneficiary of the allegedly extortionate acts." WILKIE ET AL. v. ROBBINS. David H. Souter, Justice, U.S. Supreme Court
with John Roberts, Antonin Scalia, Anthony Kennedy,
Clarence Thomas, Stephen Breyer, and Samuel Alito concurring. |
