Edit
DWA: Well, then, the 1 in 100 lucky stroke, a productive nectarine seedling, needs an explanation, which my "fruiterer" offered me..

What, that the parent nectarine was fertilized by a rose? Or was it just that occasionally a good fruit bearer does come from a seed, and if it is really good, branches will be taken and grafted to hardy rootstock?

DWA: I would also entertain the theory that some rather more handsome cherries, not too mutated, can fertilise some lucky nectarines.

Perhaps, since cherries are in the same family. It might be interesting to see if a viable tree could result. Plums have done it.
