If he is willing to moderate his stance somewhat, I see no value in criticizing his past positions. We do that to politicians, and the end result is only politicians who are either afraid to take a clear position or unwilling to change positions for fear of being labeled flip-floppers. His opinion may not have changed, but he is clearly making an effort to present it more objectively. It is better I think to encourage his effort at more objective discourse than to chastise him here for what he's done elsewhere.

And, honestly, he has a point. Field-specific lingo can facilitate communication within a field but can become a barrier to communicating with those outside of that field, leading to misunderstandings and misinterpretations. It is a problem faced by professionals from many fields, not just scientists, but it is indeed a problem in the sciences. Professionals with the communication skills to translate "professionalese" into "layman's tongue" are rare and often hold influence well beyond their professional credentials simply because laymen can understand them.

"Robbins’s claim fails because the Hobbs Act does not apply when the National Government is the intended beneficiary of the allegedly extortionate acts."

WILKIE ET AL. v. ROBBINS. David H. Souter, Justice, U.S. Supreme Court
with John Roberts, Antonin Scalia, Anthony Kennedy,
Clarence Thomas, Stephen Breyer, and Samuel Alito concurring.
