You're also making a silly argument. First, if they did not feel "practical monogamy" was important, they wouldn't be fighting so hard for it. Do you really claim to have expertise in the gay community's feelings and priorities? Second, inasmuch as you are the reigning Wiki king here, I'd have thought you would answer your own question with a little wiki-action: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Same-sex_marriage Third, I am pleased that you hold such a special view of the institution of marriage. I am certain you will make an excellent spouse and father. However, I'm not sure other adults of sound mind want you making the decision as to whether or not THEY should marry - and frankly I find this a huge departure from your usual "keep government out of people's business" philosophy. What possible argument can government make for a system that allows Britney Spears a marriage that survives less than three days while judging that gay couples who have been together for years are unworthy of marriage? Finally, I know you are not naive enough to believe that sex and marriage are consistently linked in modern society. Sexual conduct IS random, opportunistic, and unremarkable among a subset of this society. Another subset does in fact see "a 'need' for a meaningful marriage as a tacitly accepted institution". There are members of BOTH subsets in the gay community AND in the straight community, so this is clearly not an issue that relates in any way to barring gays from marriage. "Robbins’s claim fails because the Hobbs Act does not apply when the National Government is the intended beneficiary of the allegedly extortionate acts." WILKIE ET AL. v. ROBBINS. David H. Souter, Justice, U.S. Supreme Court
with John Roberts, Antonin Scalia, Anthony Kennedy,
Clarence Thomas, Stephen Breyer, and Samuel Alito concurring. |
