Skeptic Darrel:"Teenage age suicide is 43 percent higher than the national average!"

Interesting. One study proves exactly what? Which nation? I would suggest taking a comparative look at Japan, and their exam hell. Maybe Mormon parents and society do subtly, even unconsciously set higher than average, even unattainable standards? I would also be interested in comparing with Jews, who are also high-achievement tending, and probably (also) well meaning highly supportive, more than the "average".

This may just reflect the defensive milieu that these young people are eventually caught up in. You know, out of the warm nest, out into the colder, different, outside world.

This Wiki article states that young males suicide 5x as much as females. Was there a breakdown by gender in your Utah study?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Teen_suicide

"High risk groups: (partial)

Teenagers who are lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender.

Students who failed in school/exams.

Minority Indigenous adolescents, e.g. Native Americans, Indigenous Australians.

Teenagers from emotionally dysfunctional families, where they do not feel safe to talk about things or show their true feelings, and where they are regularly invalidated.

Victims of bullying or domestic abuse.

Children of divorced parents.

Children with restrictive parents.

Children who are having difficulty with school work, for example A levels or GCSEs. "

Are Mormon parents notably restrictive? Anyway, a broken/incomplete family seems to correlate with teen suicide.
