I consider the typical mid-America parental combination of industry, attention, concern and benign neglect, allowing me to be a self-starter, for example, to have been rather optimal. All the "state" could or probably would have done for me is create an alienated spoiled brat worse than you see at present.

Let's embarrassingly (?) invert this inquiry with a loaded question: Are you more comfortable with an Orwellian Air America state as a master, mentor, and role model, or with your own particular parents?
