Edit
Well, speaking as a Canadian, I have to say that Sarkozy's decision to send a thousand French troops to help ours in Kandahar is a small mercy as our per capita death rate in Afghanistan has been at the top of the NATO league table. And surely that decision is one more small step in relegating Talibanic values to history. Moreover, our budget legislation directing the deployment is insisting on the spending of more dollars on development and less on the punitive search and destroy proactive nonsense that I think is primarily only spreading the sparks more thoroughly throughout disaffected Islam (as if Vietnam never happened and as if Malaya were not a success).

So, although the stupid screw is alive and well in the world at large, in Canada we have so far avoided the worst of the US nonsense in both Iraq and Wall Street. I cannot be very sure how we have accomplished that, but perhaps our screw is a little less stupid than the screw currently in operation on the southern edges of the Great Lakes.
