Meshingelah - pronounced as it appears, Yiddish - for those who became Catholic converts out of threat of annihilation. Not a term of endearment, more slang for 'turncoat'.
As Hitler became increasingly paranoid, he came upon the idea that it was the Meshingelah - 'the hidden Jews', who were responsible for everything from his failing health to his collapsing Reich. He summoned Himmler and ordered him to go into Saxony and tear apart the walls, if necessary, to find the records of conversion. Himmler headed north and crossed the Baltic by night to Malmo, where he met with The Rabbi of Rome. He 'pleaded' for forgiveness, and was subsequently denied. Returning to Berlin, he arranged for his own escape through the Nazi underground-via Spain to Argentina. An interesting feature is that, because of this order and his going to Malmo, his own escape was delayed. The irony - that his appeal for clemency resulted in his capture reveals the power of truth. |
