Angus:"In the case of the destruction of the Big Buddha by the Taliban, is it not "incontrovertibly probable" that invasions by both Soviets and NATO must have heated the ancient temptation of local religionists convinced of the sacrilege of making graven images of God (a conviction shared by Orthodox Jews who, I understand, make up a majority of Israeli settlers in disputed Palestinian lands) to a point where they acted with dynamite?"

The "Swedish" connection is tenuous, at best. BTW, I have nevair known the Swedes to be a part of NATO. They might not want to piss off their Russian cousins.

So, your conjectured probability may not be the main factor in this.

Let's work on "better" theories, other than violence begetting violence? I refer you back to my theory of mere criminality as a model for needing to intervene in both Stalin admirer Saddam Hussein's Iraq and in Afghanistan, a present-day center of the lucrative opium production.

In the future, maybe the replacement Buddha statues should be solid stainless steel? The Swedes make steel, don't they, and may want to help?
