Edit
'Maven' applies to a rather adroit state of functional knowledge - having relevance to accomplishment within a given field of endeavor, not so much for the increase of knowledge - but more to the enhancement of personal gain, as it were.
Professional viewpoint: the word indicates a concentration of knowledge from which one would acquire income. A 'my special area of study' - thus it relates more to an early 20th C. rising status of 'professional class'and the accretion of income thereby.
'Maven' thus, applies to any form of collected information, from baseball cards to shards of letters that have no signature, as one physical example.
