More than most, Afghanistan is positioned in such a strategic central tug-of-war spot between some contending great powers, and possibly constituting routes/right-of-way for vital transport/trade, newly developed oil north of them, at the very least. Compare: Korea, maybe, historically troubled/challeged, within reciprocal spitting distance with Russia (Vladivostok), China (Peking), and Japan (Tokyo). .
