 You remind me of the case where the "th" sound was inserted into Old World Spanish speech, because, as I understand it, people were imitating their current Monarch, who spoke with a lisp, and it took, hold, stuck (sthuck) with them. (A lithp, that isth).

Of course, it cannot be THAT simple (thimple), but it makes a good thtory/story/excuse..
