Angus:"We were entirely sure that both these qualities were virtually beyond the capacities of anyone who spoke English in any accent or dialect that was recognizably not ours (which thus excuded "Yanks" just as much as it excluded "Frogs") and were certainly impossible for anyone to cquire who would not, or could not, speak English. We also implicitly assumed that, because this was indubitably so, the Empire would indeed have to last for a thousand years, which made our social roles, both inside and outside our school, automatically and unquestionably heroic." That is sort of confirming the positive potential of self-esteem and resulting self-confidence, however tenuously it may be based, then, isn't it? Naturally, the less Darwinially intelligently concieved-designed culture robust have to make room in our zero-sum earth's surface area, which is somewhat alleviated now by ability to use high strength materials and reach skywards. Rationalizing here, I just surmise that the mistaken spirit that wasted its time and energy building Stonehenge and lesser monuments was lucky to ?reluctantly assume the mantle of some of the great social-ordering concepts of the SPQR (and their Greek slaves) and also was acidentally positioned to combine the "inevitable" passable swimmer maritime skills with a coal powered industrial revolution under mostly fairly benevolent but ambitious monarchs.
