While wondering whether the S-D post is original or appropriated, I am pursuing commentary around the web on Mr. Korzybski. It seems to have some resonance with Angus and his thoughts on language, as if Angus is familiar with Korzybski. http://www.xenodochy.org/gs/hmod.html
In 1965 Gordon E. Moore, who co-founded Intel, noticed that each new computer chip contained roughly twice the capacity of its predecessor. Computing power seemed to be doubling approximately every two years.
"The Sapir-Whorf Hypothesis (the 'Korzybski' annexation came later) claims that the structure of a language defines the way a person behaves and thinks, must surely have it wrong according to many cognitive scientists, including Noam Chomsky, Steven Pinker, and others. Although the basic hypothesis of linguistic determinism surely has flaws, one should not overly criticize the first people who began thinking about this interesting subject. After all the subject refers to a hypothesis, not a theory, and certainly not fact (yet)." http://www.enotes.com/twentieth-century-criticism/korzybski-alfred
"Despite what many called an arrogant manner, Korzybski had the ability to inspire intellectual enthusiasm among numerous followers, who staunchly defended him and helped promote his theories. Detractors contended that the size and density of Science and Sanity were proof of the failure of Korzybski's theories about concision of language. The use of his principles in such varied fields as marital counseling, film-making, and horticulture led some critics to doubt the worth of much of his work. Korzybski's ideas continue to generate debate through the publication ETC"
