It is the convention hereabouts to use a pseudonym, although it is by no means a requirement. The reasons people do that vary. I, for example, have a family and am quite keenly aware that there are a few dangerous wackos out there in the internet community. We share opinions here, often controversial opinions, and some of the wackos are willing to assert their opinions by force. While I'm certain they are rare, I nonetheless have no great urge to give them more information to work with than they already have. Given the recent shooting in the Unitarian church, I believe my position is reasonable.

I will not speculate on Skeptic's reasons - and I would advise you not to do so without some base of evidence from which to speculate, lest you develop a reputation for making unwarranted and unnecessary assumptions.

WILKIE ET AL. v. ROBBINS. David H. Souter, Justice, U.S. Supreme Court
with John Roberts, Antonin Scalia, Anthony Kennedy,
Clarence Thomas, Stephen Breyer, and Samuel Alito concurring.
