Angus:"I read the accounts of vast fortunes being paid, ostensibly for performance, to executives whose companies have since had to be bailed out, and also of ponzi schemes of immense scope, when I had previously read and heard of gushing admiration for exactly those same crooks only a short time ago."

How does Angus propose to eliminate completely the possibility of people making errors and pulling *apparent* fast ones?

Comparably, will it be equally immoral if you filled up your fuel oil or propane tank right now and the price tripled next winter? What went "wrong" in many of those financing cases was that the housing/real estate bubble didn't grow some more.

I find the alternative of the "nanny state" making all of the calls, choosing its own "winners" in the lotteries to be unappealing.

From one perspective, the possibility of real rampaging inflation justified the odd stampede to real estate holdings, very rational, actually in a serious inflation, and also things like the bubble in petroleum prices.

Clearly, in HINDSIGHT, the inflationary bubble/explosion hasn't happened YET. Still could, naturally, and then the government holdings of those real estate mortgages will show a fat "immoral" profit.
